Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common form of sexual dysfunction in men. About one in three men regularly experience it. Men with PE experience uncontrolled ejaculation prior to, or very shortly after, sexual penetration. PE can cause the sexual experience to be unsatisfactory for both partners, and can increase sexual anxiety. This can exacerbate the problem and sometimes contribute to additional issues such as erectile dysfunction. Men experiencing high levels of stress or anxiety in their daily lives, as well as those who suffer sexual anxiety, are at higher risk of developing premature ejaculation. Similarly, men already experiencing erectile problems often develop PE, as they subconsciously rush intercourse for fear of losing their erections. Not every instance of PE requires medical intervention, and the problem often resolves on its own over time, or with maturity and sexual experience. Cutting-out or reducing the consumption of alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco may also improve ejaculatory control.
What causes Premature Ejaculation? A number of different factors can contribute to premature ejaculation, and often there is not one clear cause for the problem. New sexual partners, unfamiliar sexual situations, and the length of time since the man’s last ejaculation can all be contributing factors to PE. Men suffering psychological issues such as depression, stress, guilt, and/or anxiety may also be at risk. In some cases, the cause of PE is purely physical. Early ejaculation may be related to medications someone is taking, or to underlying health issues such as physical injury or hormonal imbalance. Some men who have an oversensitive glans penis (head of the penis) will have a low ejaculatory threshold. Because ejaculation is often caused by stimulation to the glans penis, these men require very little physical stimulation to cause ejaculation.
